Regarding these Intensive Driving Courses.

Postby Curious100 on Fri Jul 03, 2009 7:11 pm

What are your opinions of these intensive, 5 day driving courses? I'm thinking about doing one, but as I have never even stepped foot in a driver's seat before, something tells me that it's unlikely I'd be able to learn from scratch and be able to pass a driving test in five days. A couple of people I've talked about it to are also skeptical, so I would really like a few opinions from people who know what they're talking about.

Much appreciated.

Hi and welcome,

not a fan of the week courses myself, they can work and I have done them before, but I think they're far from ideal, even though it seems to be pretty much all people want these days

For those who want to learn quicker I prefer to do 4-6 lessons per week, usually for 90min or 2 hours, spread out over a few weeks, in my experience this gives a greater success and people seem to be happy with it.

If you do decide to go down the week course route I would first make sure that you will be taking your test at your local centre and the car you learn in will be the one you use on test, I've heard of some that get the tests at short notice at any test centre within the region and can use other instructors cars if they happen to be based closer. You will also be required to pay up front so before parting with a large amount of money it may be worth booking, say, 5 hours or so first, just to make sure you get along with the instructor and are happy with their teaching.

Good luck with whatever you decide :D

Hello,

If you want to learn proper driving, then give it at least 15 days, no doubt you can learn it in 5 days, but this learning would not be very sound and safe, and fields like driving need practice and patience.

Learning to drive taking only 1 or 2 hours of tuition a week will never be enough practice time for most learners to make real progress.

Hello,

I don't think 5 days are enough to learn a proper and safe driving. You must have to give at least 10 to 15 days. Because for prefect driving you must have do practice..

I tend to find with these, the quicker they learn, the quicker they forget.

Not a good thing in my book.

One week intensive courses are only suitable for a small number of people because as the name suggests they are very intensive and a lot to take in in a very short period. It is possible to pass after one of them but they are not suited to everyone. For most people it is better to do a semi-intensive course which is basically the same course but run over a longer period of time (2-10 weeks usually)

If you do go for the one week course a good instructor will be able to tell after day 1 if you are likely to make it to test standard by the end of the week or not. They will usually have a number of tasks that you would have to be competant at by the end of the first day and if you're struggling to get your head round those on that first day they it's highly unlikely that you're going to be ready and they would suggest postponing that test.

Unless you are really limited for time and have to take all you lessons in a week, I would advise staying away from that option.

Good luck with whatever option you choose

I have heard that the pass rate for Intensive courses is very low. Some people with good natural ability and the ability to learn quickly may benefit. However the vast majority of pupils will struggle. The trouble is you pre-book your driving test for say a friday and start your first lesson on say the monday, tuesday or even wednesday. If you're struggling to get to grips with driving then you have very little time or no time to postpone the test. I would never recommend going to test if you are not a safe driver. That's why regular 1 to 2 hrs per week or maybe a semi intensive course over about 3 to 4 weeks is better :)

I offer intensive driving courses as well as semi-intensive and hourly lessons. Some learner drivers thrive on the intensive driving courses and drive really well and are fully prepared for their driving test in the allotted time-frame. Others do better on a slightly longer semi-intensive driving course over 10-14 days. I think it's best to speak to your ADI and arrange a lesson to give your ADI a chance to see how you get on and advise you on the best course type for you. The intensive 5 day courses are very intensive and are suited to certain types of learners, the semi-intensive are generally suited to more learners in my experience.
